Frequently Asked Questions on Colorectal Surgery

Here at ParkCity Medical Centre (PMC), our colorectal surgeons share their expertise and work together to provide patients with up-to-date, evidence-based treatment. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) that we hear from patients:

How long will the surgery be?

The duration of a patient’s surgery depends on the case. In most cases, an average estimate of laparoscopic surgeries ranges anywhere from 90 to 180 minutes. This estimate isn’t inclusive of the time it takes for the patient to be put under anaesthesia, waking them up, insertion of the IV and other prep work that the nurses or doctors would do – so the actual time a patient spends in the OR may be longer.

What is the recovery time after surgery?

Most patients who go in for a laparoscopic procedure spend between one to five days in the hospital. Typically, the recovery time in a hospital for any laparoscopic procedure takes around one to three days. For open procedures, it can be three to five days. The patient will be discharged once there is evidence of bowel movements, the patient can eat, or the pain is reasonably controlled on pain medications.

Once at home, patients must take it easy and need between two to four weeks before returning to their routine. Patients may feel tired or fatigue easily at first; however, this will get better over time.

Keep in mind that post-surgery, certain complications could prolong a patient’s stay at the hospital. Some complications that may keep a patient in the hospital longer than necessary may include (but isn’t limited to) infections, ileus, an issue with the natural healing process of the intestine, anaesthesia-related problems etc. While there isn’t any way to predict or prevent occurrences from happening, patients can rest assured that they are in safe hands with PMC’s expertly-trained staff who are have experience in managing any complication that may arise.

What can a patient eat / not eat after surgery?

While there are no significant restrictions after colorectal surgery, in the early weeks' post-colorectal surgery, be sure to chew food well. Patients are advised to try and avoid spicy foods until the intestines are working more regularly.

Will the patient’s bowel habits change after surgery?

A change in bowel movements varies on a case to case basis. It is perfectly normal for a patient to go through an adjustment phase (after a rectal surgery in particular) where patients have diarrhoea, leakage of stools or gas or the urgent need to use the washroom. These are usually symptoms of spasticity of the rectum as it gets used to its new function and role. These symptoms often improve over time and can take six months to 1 year to fully get back to normal. There are medications to help during this phase and patients must consult with their colorectal surgeon.

Is bleeding normal after a colonoscopy?

Yes, slight bleeding may be expected after a colonoscopy, primarily if a procedure or biopsy was performed. The bleeding is usually light and will stop without any treatment. However, if you are experiencing excessive or continuous bleeding, it's best to check with our colorectal surgeons.
